Lyana Gobeeva: Microsoft Excel, my Faithful Helper
Success
Working in the Mediateque Department of the National Library of North Ossetia-Alania, Lyana Gobeeva has to sort and systematize information stored on electronic devices. Besides she believes that information that the library offers to its readers must be in keeping with the high standards of our advanced IT times. In order to update and enhance her professional competence Lyana Gobeeva signed up for two IDEA courses, “Basics of MS Excel” and “Basics of Word Processing,” held in the Study Center of the National Library of North Ossetia-Alania, which is one of the volunteer centers of the IDEA Project.
Overview
After completing the course in basics of word processing Ms. Gobeeva learned to format texts and design text documents and library materials in a more creative and attractive way, printing them out as brochures and booklets. Having mastered basic word processing skills, Lyana Gobeeva decided to continue working on her computer skills, as part of her job includes searching for electronic information materials.
The Mediateque Department where she works has a great variety of electronic materials and sources, including digital encyclopedias, textbooks and manuals, information and training CDs. Earlier when such electronic information devices were few, it wasn’t difficult to locate a particular CD when readers asked for it, but as the collection grew larger it became a challenge, and soon everyone could see that electronic information devices needed to be sorted and systematized.
After some discussion the librarians decided to do it with the help of MS Excel, and Lyana Gobeeva came back to the IDEA Center to take the course in “Basics of MS Excel.” After the training she came to the conclusion that creating an MS Excel database of all the electronic resources would make the work of the librarians much easier. Right now she is working on developing a comprehensive database of resources available in the Mediateque Department, knowing that it will help her to provide better service to the library’s clients, keep track of all the new and old CDs, and promptly order new electronic materials.
