Sharing Knowledge is Great Fun!
Success
As the result of her participation in training events at the IDEA Center in Izhevsk, Elena Motova, a librarian of N.K. Krupskaya central municipal library in Sarapul, the Udmurt Republic, not only received a promotion but also organized e-skills training courses for beginner users in her own library, recently graduating the first group of alumni.
Overview
Elena Motova was introduced to IDEA back in 2006, when she attended Computer Fundamentals as a beginner user. She continued visiting the IDEA Center and attended a number of seminars and training workshops for librarians. Thanks to the knowledge and skills acquired during the training, she was promoted to the position of the director of the library’s Public Legal Information Center.
Among other things, the Public Legal Information Center provides computer literacy and e-skills training, teaching its users to search for information in legal reference databases. Knowing this, Elena Motova attended a three day seminar for volunteer IDEA trainers. After learning to teach Microsoft Unlimited Potential courses and receiving all the UP materials for students and instructors, the alumna organized a training course in Computer Fundamentals for her library’s users. Since the library has only three computer workstations for common use and one computer used by the bibliographer, in September 2009 Elena recruited and later successfully trained her first group of Computer Fundamentals students, consisting of five senior citizens. Recently she started the training with another group.
The alumni were very positive about the results of their training. All of them apply their new competence in daily life, searching for information on the Internet, exchanging e-mail messages with friends and relatives, and using the Consultant Plus legal reference system.
Elena Motova, in her turn, continues studying new technologies and e-services that could be introduced in Sarapul libraries. Recently she participated in the seminar for Microsoft Digital Literacy trainers and is planning to use the curriculum for training librarians of Sarapul municipal library network in job-related ICT skills.
