Irina Kokorina: “All People are Endlessly Fascinating!”
Success
For more than ten years Irina Kokorina, the head librarian of Sakhalin regional academic library, has been the driving force behind the library’s White Crow Club for poets, writers, artists and all creative art lovers. She has long wanted to self-publish some of the club members’ work, but didn’t have adequate knowledge and skills to get started. Thanks to the Microsoft Unlimited Potential course in Computer Fundamentals, she finally acquired basic computer skills and began to produce small booklets of club members’ contributions. She formats and illustrates every booklet herself and by now has already issued more than twenty-five poetry and prose collections.
Overview
Unlike TV personalities, librarians are rarely known to the general public, but Irina Kokorina enjoys well-earned respect and admiration of thousands of Sakhalin readers. Besides regularly publishing her original crossword puzzles in the local paper, she has helped launch many local poets, writers and young artists into the art world by facilitating exhibitions in the library, promoting their work and believing that all people, without exception, are endlessly fascinating, and each of them, as a witness and maker of history, needs to be heard. Recently she initiated self-publishing of poetry and prose written by White Crow Club members, making use of the knowledge and skills she had acquired during the Microsoft Unlimited Potential course at the library’s IDEA Center.
Putting her computer proficiency to practical use, Irina Kokorina has begun to compile, edit, format and illustrate collections of poems and stories written by the club members, quickly developing into a competent publisher. Her example proved infectious: several other White Crow enthusiasts also signed up for Microsoft Unlimited Potential training courses and began attending seminars held at the IDEA Center.
