Moscow Mothers Go Back To School
Mutual help |
In the swing of studies |
On 19 October 2009, the Moscow IDEA Center based in K.D. Ushinksy Library started a four week computer training course for a unique group of students: mothers of large families. Twice a week they will attend training sessions at the IDEA Center mastering basic computer skills under the guidance of Anastasia Fokina, a patient and experienced trainer. The program is jointly facilitated by the IDEA Center, the Study Center for Social Project Management, and the National Association of Large and Adoptive Families. The current group of mothers seeking to learn basic computer skills was recruited with the help of the forum “Having Many Kids is Great!” and social security departments of Zamskvoretsky and Airport city districts.
Here is what the trainees say about their motivation for taking the course: “I have elementary computer skills but would like to feel more competent and gain a better understanding of computers and software applications;” “I once created a file and saved it but then couldn’t locate it on the computer without my husband’s help. I need to understand how files are organized and managed on the computer;” “My sister helped me register an e-mail account and showed me how to get on the Internet. I can read messages on various forums but don’t know how to register there or write my own responses.” Better chances of finding part-time work for extra income, a desire to keep up with the kids, new opportunities for interaction and exchanging photos and information – all these are very important for mothers with many children.
The program facilitators believe that even giving these busy mothers a chance to find some time and space to meet their own personal needs is in itself a significant achievement. It’s common knowledge that most parents focus mainly on their kids’ education and development, and with more kids in the family, oportunities for parents’ personal growth and development usually shrink dramatically. However, by demonstrating their determination to continue growing and keep up with the times, these mothers set their children an excellent example. Ten mothers of large families from Central and Northern boroughs of Moscow understand this well, proving themselves yet again to be not only wise and experienced parents but also excellent guides to successful future for their entire families.
