Career Building for Vladimir Youth
On 18-19 June 2009, the IDEA Center in Vladimir held a special Open Day “Youth. Education Career,” giving local youth opportunities to get career guidance, estimate their employability, find out about international exchange programs, and upgrade their skills of using electronic databases and Russian legal computer-based systems to obtain relevant information.
Librarians of M. Gorky regional academic library where the IDEA Center is located, developed and held several master classes including “Using the Internet for Job Search,” “Database Fundamentals” (using the Electronic Dissertations Library, East View Universal Databases, and the Academic Electronic Library), “Employer/Employee Rights: Consultant Plus Legal System,” “Writing a Résumé” and “Foreign Exchange Programs” (USA, UK, Germany and France).
Open Day at the IDEA Center also included free employment consultations provided by volunteers from PROFI, a local youth employment agency with the motto “Professional Help for Professional Future.” Visitors learned about the wide range of the agency’s services in the area of employment and education and consulted with its experts as well as representatives of the Youth Legal Association and psychologists from the local Youth Center. Visitors showed great interest towards new books and periodicals on career planning, career management and interactive psychology as well as youth-oriented booklets and brochures on related topics.
Even a brief look at the statistics will show that such events are extremely relevant and timely: during the two-day event 116 young people visited the IDEA Center to ask for career and employment guidance, inquire about international exchange opportunities, and learn about online information search and electronic resources. “Such Open Days are extremely important for the youth of our city,” said Sergey Lebedyev, a third year student from Vladimir State University. “Especially since most of us start thinking about permanent employment way before we actually graduate. Now I know how to go about looking for a job. It would be great if such events were held regularly.”
