The National Library of North Ossetia-Alania was founded in 1895 and remains one of the oldest libraries in the North Caucasus. It boasts more than 1,000,000 volumes and a large and diverse readership.

In 2003 the library launched an Internet Access and Training Center, which significantly expanded the library’s information resources. The Center provides free access to global information recourses and offers computer training courses, giving local residents an excellent opportunity to gain basic computer and Internet skills and use new IT technologies for their professional, educational and public work. The Center also hosts various cultural events, sponsored by the library. Its main mission is to provide every patron with free access to web-based information resources and practical training in computer and Internet literacy as an important tool for raising his/her self-esteem and professional competence.
