The organization joined the IDEA network in 2008, after its leader had participated in several trainings at the IDEA Center, based at the Archangelsk Regional Association of NGOs for People with Disabilities.
The organization is still very young; it was registered in September 2005, after eighteen months of functioning as an independent taskforce. Since then we have been implementing several projects:
- Since launch until now we have been implementing the grant-winning project “PC Training for Blind Users” based in the Archangelsk Regional Library for the Blind.
- In February – June 2006, in partnership with Dobrolubov Regional Academic Library, we implemented the Helping Hand volunteer project sponsored by BAT Russia.
- Our project “Families Discovering the World” won in the Family Contest held by the municipal administration of Archangelsk jointly with Aurora Company and the Garant Center’s board of directors. The project is aimed at providing training in basic computer literacy and skills of using special access applications for families of visually impaired children.
- In December 2006 – April 2007 we implemented the project “Vocational Profiling of Teenagers with Visual Impairments” which had won the municipal contest “The City of Future Generations.
- Yet another successful project was “In Summer’s Hands,” the winner of the city contest “New Horizons.” Its main objective was to organize joint recreation for young people with disabilities and youth with no health problems. The project was facilitated by volunteers from partner organizations “Vertical” and “Blagodeya” and the rehabilitation center for children with cerebral spastic infantile paralysis. Fourteen young people with disabilities spent five days in a vacation resort outside the city, actively participating in recreational activities and making new friends. The project proved beneficial for the morale of the young people with disabilities and instrumental in increasing awareness of and tolerance towards them on the part of young people with no health problems.
- Our project “PC Training for Blind Users,” aimed at supporting visually impaired youth and students, received the national award “The Future of Russia” (Moscow, 2007) and a 500,000 ruble grant from the federal budget. The project’s training program focuses on social rehabilitation of visually impaired young people with the help of modern computer technologies through such activities as computer-based English language courses, developing and maintaining the organization’s website, and creating an electronic library for the blind. |
