Kamchatka regional library is the largest information, educational and cultural center in the Russian Far East. It boasts more than 600,000 books, periodicals, research papers and materials, volumes of sheet music, vinyl records, audio cassettes, video materials, electronic documents and CD-ROMs. The library has a membership of 33,000 readers and is daily visited by more than 700 people. Its reading halls virtually function as classrooms or study rooms for secondary school and college students of the Kamchatka Peninsula. The library lays a special emphasis on developing social partnership with the local authorities and maintaining productive interaction with various structures of the local community through joint programs aimed at promoting national, ethical and cultural values and encouraging reading in various population groups.
In 2002, S. P. Krasheninnikov Kamchatka Regional Academic Library launched its Internet Center, which in 2006 joined the network of IDEA Centers, administered by Project Harmony, Inc. The Center has ten computer stations with Internet connection. Its main mission is to promote Internet information resources and train and encourage local residents to use the Internet as a means of interpersonal interaction and exchange of knowledge, culture and ideas. The Center offers instructional support and training in basic computer skills. |
